Haiti Disaster Relief, 2010
In the aftermath of the tragedy in Haiti, Rotary Clubs around the world banded together to provide aid to those affected by the earthquake via the ShelterBox organization. ShelterBox is a U.K.-based disaster response organization supported by Rotary clubs worldwide. Each ShelterBox kit costs $1000 and
contains a 10-person tent, a water purification system and other survival necessities.
The Canadian Rotary Clubs alone donated over 3000 shelter boxes. We would like to thank our members and friends who donated to this worthy cause. We were able to send $2750 to ShelterBox on behalf of the RCOY.
In addition to monetary donations, some of our members participated in the Multi-Cultural Canada for Haiti Telethon that aired on Omni TV, Chin Radio, and other ethnic media on Sat. Jan. 30, 2010. Our members took calls from members of the community looking to donate funds to the people in Haiti. The funds raised were channeled via UNICEF.
Clean Drinking Water Projects in China, 2009

The 2009-2010 Drinking Water Project in Riluo Village, Butuo County, Sichuan Province, China
Another ambitious joint project of the Rotary Club of York, the Rotary Club of Peninsula South in Hong Kong & the China Development Department of The Salvation Army, aims at solving the difficulty of 910 villagers' access to clean drinking water in Riluo village.
Riluo village has a total population of 2390 and is located in one of the poverty-stricken counties. The water shortage in this rural village has caused health problems, such as diarrhea, malnutrition, and is a major factor in the worsening poverty level in this village. At the completion of the project, the villagers were provided with basic health and hygiene knowledge. This project improved the living conditions of half of the population of the village.
Our PP Rotarian Doris Au attended the handover ceremony on our behalf in October, 2009.

Rotarian Peter talked about the Ambassadorial Scholarship. Ambassadorial Scholarship, the Rotary Foundation's oldest and best-known program, was founded in 1947. Since then, nearly 38,000 men and women from about 100 nations have studied abroad under its auspices. Today it is the world's largest privately funded international scholarships program. Nearly 800 scholarships were awarded for study in 2005-06. Through grants totaling approximately US$500 million, recipients from about 70 countries studied in more than 70 nations.
The purpose of the Ambassadorial Scholarships program is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries and geographical areas. The program sponsors several types of scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students as well as for qualified professionals pursuing vocational studies. While abroad, scholars serve as goodwill ambassadors to the host country and give presentations about their homelands to Rotary clubs and other groups. Upon returning home, scholars share with Rotarians and others the experiences that led to a greater understanding of their host country.
Generous contributions from Rotarians worldwide represent a continued faith that today's Ambassadorial Scholars will be tomorrow's community and world leaders.
RCOY participated in the program and hosted student from Taiwan who stayed in Rotarian Jones's house while he studied at University of Toronto.
