Rotary Youth Leadership Awards is a program for young people that Rotary International adopted in 1971. It helps to train young people in the community in developing good citizenship and leadership skills. This year, the program for District 7070 was held from May 25th-29th at Loyalist College in Belleville, Ontario.
The eligible participants were between 19-22 years of age and had to show leadership qualities to gain sponsorship from a Rotary Club. The Rotary Club of York is proud to sponsor two very qualified participants this year, Sheneil Black and Maria Chios.
When asked about her experience at the RYLA program, Sheneil had this to say: "It's great! In the day, we had classes. We learned how to deal with changes, how to build effective teams, how to deal with people who have different characteristics, and how to deliver a good presentation. In the evenings, we played games and we had a bbq. We made a video, a newsletter, and a presentation for the Rotarians who came to see what the program is about. It was a lot of fun! I learned so much! I feel like I've known these people for years."
