Daily Bread Food Bank's 2nd annual 24-Hour Food Sort, 2008
Rotarian David  How

Daily Food Bank Food Sort 2008A group of 21 members and their families headed downtown on Friday night to DBFB on New Toronto Road to participate in the 2nd annual food sort competition. We were divided into a team of ten to sort through and pack 3000 lbs of foods. We worked diligently to complete the task in 70 minutes and everyone had a great time. Our club also donated $1,000.00 to support this event. Thanks to Sunrise Montessori for collecting a lot of food for the DBFB.

A total of 50 teams sorted through 120,000 lbs of food and packed 6,549 boxes over a 24 hour period. The event was won by team Lexis Nexis which sorted an average of 1 box every 17.8 seconds. RCOY team 1 was placed 9th with a time of 28.3 seconds per box.

I would like to thank all the members and families who participated in the event and hope the club will continue to support such a meaningful event next year.

Hi David,

Thank you for participating in Daily Bread Food Bank's 2nd annual 24-Hour Food Sort.

The event raised $33,744 through sponsorship, participation fees & pledges.  This money will go directly towards Daily Bread Food Bank's 164 member agencies, which help us serve 952,000 clients in the GTA every year, 34% of whom are children.  The event also gained coverage on Global TV & Flow Radio, further enhancing the 24-Hour Food Sort's credible & unique concept

All 50 teams in attendance brought great energy and community spirit.  Entrees in the events second year shows unprecedented growth, and already has our staff at Daily Bread Food Bank looking forward to further developing the event next year!  Hopefully you will again join us!

2008's 24-Hour Food Sort - Top 10 Quick Facts:

  1. The 50 participating teams were made up from 30 different Companies & Community Groups!
  2. If all teams sorted their allocated food one after the other, we would have been sorting for over 70 HOURS!
  3. A total of 6549 boxes of food were filled and counted!
  4. Over 120,000 pounds of food was shifted!
  5. The event was won by one of the last 3 teams to compete, Lexis Nexis who sorted an average of 1 box every 17.8 seconds!  It should be noted that Lexis Nexis sort food at various agencies every Saturday.  Maybe practice does make perfect!
  6. Nielsen entered 9 teams (the most) in the event!
  7. Special mention of the sort goes to Bloomberg LP.  With 7 of their team called into work last minute, 3 Bloomberg employees still turned up and sorted through 50 boxes by themselves, showing great spirit and commitment to the cause.
  8. 24 teams beat last years winning time of 35.6 seconds!
  9. $33,744 with Daily Bread Food Bank's purchasing power will buy close to $60,000 worth of food.

After the event I lay/slept in bed for 17 hours....FACT!
